As some of you may know already that I’ve been on quite a journey with my skin, sometimes it gets sensitive or sensitised to the point of having red patches and sometimes my skin just looks a bit inflamed. One of my firm favourite range for tackling this issue is Ren’s Evercalm range and I’ve tried everything in the range, I can honestly say they are all brilliant. Out of all the products, the Overnight Recovery Balm has to be my favourite (the Ultra Comforting Rescue Mask comes a very close second, this was discussed in my SOS Edit- Repair Skin Barrier post)

What is it?

“Overnight hydrating, barrier repair oil.”

What it does

This rich night balm feeds your skin with:

  • Lipids from Olive, Almond, Borage and Linseed oils: Intensely nourish and moisturise when the skin’s own regenerative process takes place at night.
  • Jojoba and sunflower oil complex: Supports the skin’s natural lipid balance to strengthen the skin protective barrier
  • Beta-Glucan: Soothes and alleviates visible signs of sensitivity.

Note there are a few fragrance ingredients (marked in bold), so if you are sensitive to these ingredients then be careful. Also, there are a few ingredients that are deemed as fungal acne triggers (marked in italic), so those who are acne-prone might also need to watch out.

All REN’s products contain only natural ingredients and do not contain parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, petrolatum, synthetic fragrance, synthetic colours, T.E.A, D.E.A or silicones.

Packaging

This comes in a small glass jar and cap. Both cap and jar are both 100% recyclable.

Colour, Texture & Scent

This glossy light yellowish balm is rich but not oily or greasy. It feels a bit waxy and sinks into the skin quickly. Think oil that’s been solidified slightly, when in contact with skin, it melts away.

There’s a very faint smell in the green and natural sense but it’s barely noticeable.

How to use it

At night, apply to freshly cleansed skin. Use after your serum. Can also be used to soothe dry lips and rough dry patches such as the elbows and knees.

Ren instruction

Like most balms, you need the tiniest amount! It really is a tiny bit goes a long way. I use less than half a pea-size. Typically I would finish my nighttime routine and go about my evening, then apply this balm right before I go to bed. I let it melt in my fingertips first and then press it onto my skin.

Final thoughts and experience

When my skin gets inflamed and dehydrated to the point of looking sore, this balm gets rid of the flakiness and redness better than anything I’ve tried. Admittedly I was sceptical at first because the idea of putting an oily balm all over oily acne-prone skin didn’t exactly appeal to me. However, this is surprisingly lightweight (and not that oily either), and absorbs super quickly. This has not caused me any breakouts despite some fungal acne trigger ingredients. However, I haven’t used this when my skin is ‘normal’ or my skin barrier isn’t compromised which means my natural sebum production might not respond to these ingredients as it would otherwise.

I treat this as an SOS item or when I have used strong acids or retinol that evening, I use this to pre-empt any sensitivity. In the morning my skin looks visibly clearer with redness much lessen, so I think it does take overnight to work its magic.

This product has been such a game-changer for me, I haven’t ever tried any balms at this price point that gives such an amazing result before. It’s such a wonderful product for my skin and it’s one I’d highly recommend you try out. This is a true hero product for healing damaged or fragile skin barrier.
