Review: Zoologist – Moth

Super excited about my new acquisition – I don’t know if anyone has a similar train of thoughts when purchasing Zoologist perfume. A quick introduction to this niche perfume house, they are based in Canada and their perfumes are inspired by animals (their habitats, behaviours and looks).

Well, I started by looking at the animals and see which ones I would emotionally resonate with the most first. I picked out Moth, Panda and Elephant, then I read up the descriptions and the notes, ok all sounded good but nothing beats sniffing them in person. When I eventually went into the shop, I smelled them all including the ones I didn’t pick. Lo and behold, Moth is the one! 💕

Here’s a quick review:

Packaging

Normally I would immediately discard all of the packaging and cards for the sake of saving space, but this one is a faux leather-bound box with the description and notes label on one side and the perfume is placed into a carved out slot. The bottle is so very heavy weighted glass bottle and again with a faux leather cap.

Concept

“At first encounter, the rich, gothic scent of Zoologist Moth may surprise but soon it hypnotizes.” It’s a very romantic but not in a Cinderella fairy tale kind of romance, more Rome and Juliette a romantic tragedy. An image of a woman wearing black lace face mask comes to mind. She’s hauntingly beautiful, dark and mysterious. She’s an enigma!

Scent

The nose behind this perfume is Tomoo Inaba.

Top Notes: Black pepper, Cinnamon, Clove, Cumin, Lemon, Nutmeg, Saffron

Heart Notes: Heliotrope, Iris, Jasmine, Mimosa, Lily of the valley, Rose

Base Notes: Ambergris, Honey, Resins, Guaiac wood, Musk, Nagarmotha, Oud, Patchouli, Smoke, Vetiver.

The opening is quite powerful especially with all the spices but it softens itself over time and feels comforting. Moth has become mainly slightly-smoky vetiver and oud fragrance, with a whiff of light floral a and honey musk. I like Oud and this one has a hint of oud, not too pungent.

This perfume is most suitable for cold, rainy days when the sky is a bit grim and air almost feels crisp and icy. It’ll warm you up.

On me, it typically lasts about a good 10 hours+, and as for projection, I’m guessing it’s moderate.

Do you have a favourite Zoologist perfume? 💕 Next one I’m curious about is Camel, then it’s Elephant.
